Plenty of Newcastle homes need a couple of things done at once, like interior and exterior, or a roof and gutters together. We quote it as one job, so you get one clear written price from your local painter in Newcastle.

What plasterboard damage can you repair?

Door-handle holes, small dents, cracks and damaged wall sections can be assessed for repair. Drywall is plasterboard, often called Gyprock in Australia. The size of the damage and the condition of the board determine whether the area can be filled or needs a patch fitted into sound board.

We check the surrounding wall as well as the visible hole. Tell us if the damage has grown, keeps returning or followed a leak. That information helps separate a surface repair from a problem that needs another trade to address the cause before the board is repaired.

How is a damaged wall repaired?

Loose material is removed and the damaged area is prepared. The repair method depends on the size and position of the damage. A patch needs support, sound edges and finished joints; a smaller dent may need filling. The repaired surface is allowed to dry before it is sanded.

Once the patch is smooth, it is primed for painting. The aim is a sound surface ready for the agreed wall finish. At the site visit we explain which areas need repair and which walls will be repainted, so the quote covers the finish as well as the patch.

Can you repair water-damaged plasterboard?

Water-damaged board needs the moisture source fixed and the surrounding area assessed first. Soft, swollen or sagging material may need replacement rather than filling. Let us know whether a roof leak, plumbing leak or other source has been repaired before arranging the painting work.

A dry old stain and a wet damaged board are different jobs. We inspect the area before agreeing the repair and coating. If the damage is beyond the painting scope, the required work is identified before a finish is applied, so you can arrange the right repair sequence.

Will the patch show after the wall is painted?

The finish depends on the repair, the primer, the old wall texture and the light in the room. Painting the whole wall can blend the colour and sheen more evenly than coating a small square around the patch. We discuss that difference before the quote is agreed.

Fresh paint can look different from paint that has aged, even when the colour name is the same. Side lighting can also reveal uneven surfaces. The repair is checked in the room’s normal light, and the written scope states whether the patch, whole wall or whole room is being painted.

Can repairs and painting be booked as one job?

Yes. Suitable repairs can be quoted together with the repaint. Our interior work includes preparing walls before the finish goes on, and our customers describe that care in their reviews. Joanne Brandrick’s review specifically mentions the preparation and finish on multiple rooms and feature walls.

Occupied rooms need enough space around the repair for preparation, sanding and protection. Move small belongings and let us know about furniture that is difficult to shift. Drying between repair and paint stages is allowed for in the job sequence rather than covered over while still wet.

What affects the cost of drywall repair?

You can check my licence with NSW Fair Trading and read Gyprock’s plasterboard painting guidance at the manufacturer or regulator’s website. For the work available, see our Newcastle painting services.

The damage size, number of patches, ceiling height, access and amount of repainting all affect the price. A small hole on one clear wall is a different job from several damaged rooms. The cause of the damage also matters, particularly where a ceiling has been affected by water.

I am Jye Hughes, based in Edgeworth, with NSW painter-decorator licence 476719C. Send photos and your suburb with the enquiry, and tell us whether you want just the affected wall or the room repainted. I check the surfaces before giving a written quote for the repair and finishing work.

Frequently Asked

Questions about drywall repair in Newcastle

Can you fix a hole left by a door handle?

A door-handle hole can be assessed and patched where the surrounding plasterboard is sound. The repair is finished, allowed to dry, sanded and primed before painting. Tell us whether you want the whole wall repainted, because the old colour and texture can affect the final match.

Do you repair ceiling cracks too?

Suitable ceiling repairs can be quoted with the painting. We inspect the crack and surrounding board first. Repeated movement, sagging or moisture damage needs its cause assessed before coating. Photos and a description of when the crack appeared help us plan the site visit.

Can you just paint the repaired spot?

A local touch-up can be discussed, but its match depends on the old colour, sheen and texture. Painting the whole wall gives a more consistent finish in many rooms. We explain the options at the site visit and put the agreed painting area into the quote.

What should I do before a water-damaged wall is repaired?

Arrange for the leak or moisture source to be fixed, then have the damaged material assessed. The surface needs to be suitable and dry before repair and paint. Tell us what caused the damage and which repair work has already been done when you request a quote.

Do you handle the painting after the repair?

Yes, when it is included in the scope. We can quote suitable plasterboard repair, preparation, primer and repainting together. The written quote identifies the repaired areas and the surfaces being painted, so you know whether the finish covers a patch, wall or whole room.
