Drywall Painting in Newcastle
We prepare and paint plasterboard walls and ceilings across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, from new sheets to repaired walls and existing painted rooms.
Preparation, sealer and finish are chosen for the surface and included in the agreed written quote before work starts.
Got more than one job in mind?
Plenty of Newcastle homes need a couple of things done at once, like interior and exterior, or a roof and gutters together. We quote it as one job, so you get one clear written price from your local painter in Newcastle.
Painting Plasterboard Walls and Ceilings
Drywall is another name for plasterboard, often called Gyprock in Australia. It has a paper face, while the joins and repairs are covered with a different material called jointing compound. Both can be painted once the board is properly finished, dry and ready for its coating system.
We check new walls, repaired sections and previously painted plasterboard at the site visit. Tell us whether a plasterer has finished the joints and sanding, or whether repairs are part of the job you want quoted. The preparation depends on the actual wall, rather than the word used to describe it.

Preparing New Plasterboard for Paint
The joins, screw heads and corners are checked before coating. Dust is removed after the finished surface has been sanded. A suitable plasterboard sealer evens out how the paper and jointing compound absorb the paint, then the finish coats are applied over the prepared surface.
The room’s light matters. Sunlight crossing the wall from a side window can reveal uneven joins and patches. We look at those areas before painting and discuss the finish you are choosing. Dark colours and shinier paint make the underlying surface more noticeable than a light, matt finish.
Preparing and Painting Patched Walls
Once a repair has dried, it is checked, sanded and primed before the finish is applied. If the wall has many repairs, repainting the whole wall gives a more consistent colour and sheen than touching up individual spots against an older coating.
A patch can look different because the repaired surface absorbs paint differently or because the old paint has changed with age. We check both at the quote. If the damage came from a leak or continuing movement, the cause needs to be addressed before the surface is prepared for painting.
Choosing a Finish for Plasterboard Walls
The room’s use, light and cleaning needs determine the finish. Living rooms and bedrooms have different demands from bathrooms and laundries. We can talk through the colour and sheen alongside the existing doors, ceilings and trim, so the finished room looks consistent.
Our gallery shows a Newcastle open-plan living repaint with neutral walls and white trim, as well as a darker green room. Those finished rooms show different colour choices on real jobs. You can use them to explain the look you prefer when we visit to quote.

Painting Renovations and New Builds
Newly lined rooms, extensions and whole-house interiors can be quoted as one painting job. The plasterboard needs to be ready before the painting stage begins, and the order of flooring, fittings and other trades affects access. We agree that sequence with you before scheduling the work.
For an occupied home, rooms can be planned in stages with furniture and floors protected. Let us know which rooms need to stay usable and which are clear. A written scope lists the walls, ceilings and trim included, together with the preparation those surfaces need.
A Licensed Painter and a Written Quote
You can check my licence with NSW Fair Trading and read Gyprock’s plasterboard painting guidance at the manufacturer or regulator’s website. For the work available, see our Newcastle painting services.
I am Jye Hughes, a licensed painter-decorator based in Edgeworth. Hughesys Painting works across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. I hold NSW licence 476719C and inspect the surfaces before giving the written price, including any preparation that is part of the agreed job.
When you enquire, tell us whether the board is new, repaired or already painted. Photos, your suburb and the rooms involved help us plan the site visit. Wall area, ceiling height, access and the condition of the board all affect the quote. The price is written for the surfaces we agree to paint.

Questions about drywall painting in Newcastle
Does new plasterboard need a sealer?
Yes. The paper face and jointing compound absorb paint differently. A suitable plasterboard sealer prepares them for the finish coats. CSR Gyprock’s painting guidance explains why this step matters, particularly when light falls across the wall and highlights differences in the surface.
Can you paint straight over a repaired patch?
A patch needs to be dry, sanded and primed before the finishing coats. We check the repair and surrounding paint at the site visit. Repainting the whole wall can give a more even result than a small touch-up against older paint with a different colour or sheen.
Do you paint ceilings made from plasterboard?
Yes. Plasterboard ceilings can be included with the walls or quoted as a ceiling job. We check joints, marks, height and access before agreeing the preparation and finish. Let us know if there are water stains or cracks so they can be assessed before painting.
Will a dark paint colour show the joins?
Dark colours and higher gloss can make surface variation more visible, especially when light falls across the wall. We assess the plasterboard finish and room lighting before coating. The colour choice and preparation are considered together so you understand what the finished wall will show.
Do you also repair damaged plasterboard?
Suitable plasterboard repairs can be included in the quote before painting. Tell us how the damage happened and whether the cause has been fixed. Larger, damp or moving sections need assessment first. The written scope identifies the repair and the wall or room to be repainted.
