Door Painting in Newcastle
Door painting covers the door itself, its edges, frame and surrounding trim.
We repaint internal and external doors across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, with the surfaces and finish listed in your written quote. The Merewether doors in our gallery show the sort of clean white finish we can carry through a home.
Got more than one job in mind?
Plenty of Newcastle homes need a couple of things done at once, like interior and exterior, or a roof and gutters together. We quote it as one job, so you get one clear written price from your local painter in Newcastle.
Which doors can you paint?
We paint bedroom, bathroom, laundry, hallway and entry doors, along with their frames and architraves. Architraves are the strips of timber surrounding the frame. Internal doors can be included in a room repaint or quoted together as a separate job when the walls are already in good condition.
At the site visit we check the door material, existing coating and how each door closes. Timber and previously painted doors need different preparation from a bare new door. The quote names the doors, frames and sides included, so an entry door and a whole house of doors have a clear scope.

How are doors prepared before painting?
Handles and nearby fittings are protected or removed where practical. The surface is cleaned, loose paint is removed, small dents are filled and the remaining coating is sanded for the new finish. Bare timber and repairs receive a suitable primer before the finishing coats.
The edges matter as much as the broad face of the door. We check the top, bottom and latch edge when agreeing the job. Existing gaps and rubbing points are checked before paint is applied, so you can arrange any adjustment the door needs. A paint finish follows the condition of the surface underneath.
What finish suits an internal or front door?
A door gets handled more often than a wall. A durable trim finish makes finger marks easier to wipe away. Satin, semi-gloss and gloss have different levels of shine; we talk through the finish alongside the skirting boards and frames so the joinery looks consistent.
An external door needs a coating suited to its material and exposure. A west-facing entry gets different weather from a protected hallway door. The existing finish is checked before choosing the new coating, and the paint maker’s drying and recoating instructions determine when it is ready for its next coat.
Can you paint doors while we live in the house?
Yes. Access is planned around the rooms you use and the doors that need to stay available. Wet paint needs time to dry before a door can be shut against its frame. We explain the sequence before starting, particularly for bathrooms, bedrooms and the main entrance.
Clear the space around each door and move belongings off hooks before the agreed start. We protect nearby flooring and furniture while preparing and painting. If you want several doors done, doing them together allows the colour and finish to be matched across the hallway and adjoining rooms.

Can the frames and skirting boards be done too?
Yes. Doors, frames and skirting boards often work best as one trim repaint. The Merewether job in our gallery included interior doors, frames and trim together. A consistent finish makes the doors look part of the room rather than a fresh patch against older joinery.
Tell us whether you also want walls or ceilings painted. Those surfaces can be included in one written quote and scheduled in the right order. An older home may also need repairs to its trim before painting; we identify those at the site visit and put the agreed work into the scope.
What affects the cost of door painting?
You can check my licence with NSW Fair Trading and read SafeWork NSW’s guidance on older lead coatings at the manufacturer or regulator’s website. For the work available, see our Newcastle painting services.
The number of doors, whether both sides are included, the condition of the paint and the amount of detailed trim all affect the price. A panelled door takes more preparation and cutting in than a plain flat door. Frames, architraves and exterior access are listed separately within the job scope.
Send photos with your enquiry and let us know your suburb and how many doors you have in mind. I visit to check the surfaces before giving the written price. Hughesys Painting is based in Edgeworth, and I hold NSW painter-decorator licence 476719C. Your quote is for the doors we have actually inspected.

Questions about door painting in Newcastle
Do you paint both sides of a door?
Yes, when both sides are included in the quote. We also agree which edges, frames and surrounding trim are included. Mention any doors with a different colour on each side at the site visit, so the finished edge and colour change are planned before painting.
Can you paint over a stained timber door?
A stained timber door can often be painted after the existing coating is checked, cleaned and prepared. The right primer depends on the timber and finish underneath. We inspect it before quoting and explain the preparation and coating proposed for that particular door.
How long before I can close a freshly painted door?
The coating and conditions determine the drying time. Dry to the touch and ready to close against a frame can be different stages. We follow the paint maker’s instructions and tell you when each door can be handled and closed, so wet edges stay clear of the frame.
Can you match the other white trim in my house?
We can check the existing colour and finish and discuss the closest match. Older white paint can change with age and light. Repainting the doors and adjoining frames together gives a more consistent result than matching one fresh door to several older surfaces.
Do you paint doors in Lake Macquarie as well as Newcastle?
Yes. Hughesys Painting is based in Edgeworth and works across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Our gallery includes doors and trim from Merewether. Put your suburb and the doors you want painted into the quote request, and we can arrange a site visit.
