Bathroom Painting in Newcastle

Bathroom painting is a repaint of the painted surfaces in a bathroom: the ceiling, the walls around the tiles, the door and the trims.

The work uses a paint made for steam and moisture, after any mould is cleaned off and the surface is prepared. I paint bathrooms in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, including the Cameron Park bathroom shown further down.

Got more than one job in mind?

Plenty of Newcastle homes need a couple of things done at once, like interior and exterior, or a roof and gutters together. We quote it as one job, so you get one clear written price from your local painter in Newcastle.

Which parts of a bathroom can be painted?

The ceiling and the plasterboard walls are the main surfaces, along with the door, door frame, window frame and skirting. The ceiling takes the most steam in a bathroom, which is why paint usually peels or spots with mould there first.

The shower recess and anything that keeps water out are separate work. Waterproofing is done by a licensed waterproofer, and a leaking shower needs fixing before the walls around it are painted.

Why does bathroom paint peel and go mouldy?

Steam settles on the ceiling and upper walls every time someone showers. If the room does not dry out between showers, moisture gets behind old paint so it bubbles and peels, and mould grows on the surface. NSW Health's mould fact sheet recommends running the exhaust fan when showering and opening windows when the weather allows.

Paint alone will not fix a bathroom that never dries out. If the exhaust fan is missing or too weak, mention it when you ask for a quote, because new paint lasts longer once the steam has somewhere to go.

How is a bathroom prepared before painting?

Mould is cleaned off and the surface is left to dry. Peeling and flaking paint is scraped back, the edges are sanded smooth and small holes or cracks are filled. Bare patches are primed so the new paint grips them the same way it grips the rest of the wall.

The finish coats are a paint made for bathrooms, which includes a mould inhibitor: an additive that slows mould growing on the paint. The vanity, toilet, fittings and floor are covered while the work is done.

How long before I can use the shower again?

The paint needs time to dry before steam touches it. Plan for the bathroom to be out of use while it is painted and until the paint has dried for the time the product needs. Each paint has its own drying time, and you will be told the time for the product used on your job.

For the first few showers, run the exhaust fan and leave the door open afterwards so the room dries quickly.

What affects the cost of painting a bathroom?

The size of the bathroom, the amount of mould and peeling paint, the number of surfaces and whether the colour is changing all change the price. A bathroom is often painted together with a hallway, laundry or bedroom, which can be quoted as one job.

Frequently Asked

Questions about bathroom painting in Newcastle

Can you paint over mould in a bathroom?

No. Mould is cleaned off first and the surface is dried, then the paint goes on. Painting straight over mould lets it grow back through the new paint. If mould keeps returning after cleaning, the room needs better ventilation as well as new paint.

What paint is best for a bathroom?

A paint made for bathrooms, with a mould inhibitor and a finish that handles steam and wiping. A low-sheen or semi-gloss finish is common on bathroom walls and ceilings. The product is chosen for your room and written into the quote.

Do you paint the bathroom ceiling and walls together?

Yes. The ceiling, walls, door and trims are usually painted in one visit. Planning them together keeps the preparation in order and gives the room clean lines where the ceiling meets the walls.

Can you fix peeling paint on a bathroom ceiling?

Yes. Loose paint is scraped back, the edges are sanded and filled, and bare areas are primed before the finish coats. If the peeling is caused by a leak from above, the leak needs repairing first.

Do you do waterproofing?

No. Waterproofing a shower or wet area is licensed work done by a waterproofer. The painting covers the ceiling, walls, door and trims once any leaks have been fixed.
