Painting a bathroom in Cooks Hill, Newcastle

Here is what was done, and what bathrooms and older homes in Cooks Hill usually need.

The job

A tiled bathroom with grey tiles up the walls. The ceiling and the walls above the tiles were painted in a clean white, which makes a small room with one window feel a lot brighter.

Bathrooms are small, but they take careful work: lots of edges against tile, fittings and the shower screen, and paint that has to stand up to steam every day.

What bathroom paint needs

Any mould is cleaned off and treated first, because painting over it only hides it for a few weeks. Then a mould-resistant paint goes on, made for wet rooms.

The room needs to dry between coats, so it's best not to shower in it for a day. Tell me if it's your only bathroom and the work is planned around that. See bathroom painting in Newcastle.

Painting older homes in Cooks Hill

Cooks Hill has some of Newcastle's oldest homes: brick terraces, timber cottages and iron lace verandahs. Old timber carries many layers of paint, so flaking paint is scraped back and bare timber is primed before any colour goes on. Paint this old can contain lead, so I check for it at the quote.

Much of Cooks Hill is a heritage conservation area. If you want to change the outside colours, check with the City of Newcastle first. Repainting in the same colours, and anything inside, is up to you.

Heritage rules and contacts are on the City of Newcastle's heritage pages.

How much does it cost?

For a bathroom, it depends on the size, the ceiling height and whether there's mould to treat. For a whole house, it's the number of rooms and the state of the walls.

Every quote is written and lists each surface. For what goes into a painting price, see how much a painter costs in Newcastle.

Frequently Asked

Questions from Cooks Hill homeowners

How long does a bathroom repaint take?

Usually a day or two, depending on the size and how much prep it needs. It then needs to dry before showers.

Can you get rid of bathroom mould for good?

The mould is cleaned and treated and a mould-resistant paint goes on. Good airflow, like running the fan, keeps it away.

Do you paint old terraces?

Yes. The prep takes longest: scraping, filling, rust treatment and priming.

Do I need council approval to repaint outside?

For colour changes in the heritage area, check with the City of Newcastle first.

Is the quote free?

Yes. The site visit and the written quote are free.
