Repainting an empty house in Cardiff
In July 2026 I repainted the living room and hallway of an empty house in Cardiff, about a kilometre from the station.
Here's how the job went, with the photos.
What was the job?
When I got there the house was empty, with the rooms clear and nobody living in it yet. The job was the two rooms that take the most wear in any home, the living room and the long hallway.
The living room has a row of downlights, two windows and a sliding security door out to the yard. The walls went white, and with the room empty there was nothing to work around.

How did it go?
An empty house is the easiest time to paint. Every wall is easy to reach, the only thing that needs covering is the floor, and I can move from one room to the next without stopping.
Prep came first, like on every job: sand, fill, prime, then paint. The hallway took the most care. It runs most of the length of the house past the doors to the other rooms, and a long, straight wall shows every patch and every roller mark if the prep is rushed.

Painting a house while it's empty
If you own a rental or you're getting a house ready to move into, the gap while it's empty is the time to paint. Tell me the date it empties and the date someone moves in, and the job is planned to fit in between.
Holes from picture hooks, scuffs and marks from whoever lived there last are filled and sanded before any paint goes on. Hallways and living areas get a washable finish, because those are the walls that get marked first.

Do you paint other houses around Cardiff?
Yes. I'm based in Edgeworth, about 10 minutes up Main Road, so Cardiff, Cardiff South, Cardiff Heights, Macquarie Hills and Glendale are all close by.
The streets near Cardiff station have some of the suburb's oldest homes, weatherboard cottages and early brick houses, and they need more prep than a newer house: flaking paint scraped back, gaps filled, bare timber primed, and a check for lead in paint from before the 1970s, following SafeWork NSW's lead guidance.
I also paint offices, showrooms and workshops in the Cardiff Industrial Estate, worked around trading hours; see commercial painting in Newcastle. More of my work is on the Hughesys Painting website.
